Steer operate aquatic vessels using a variety of techniqu​es
Compute position, speed, and course through the use of charts, maps, compasses, sextants and GPS
Inspect aquatic vessels to insure that they are in compliance with any naval law or code and that the vessel will operate efficiently and safely
Direct and coordinate crew members in the neccesary tasks of running a ship
Supervise the taking on and discharge of cargo and passengers
Calculate water depth and land sightings using charts and measuring equipment
Alert and signal passing vessels using a variety of means to convey neccesary information
Signal crew members to begin and end tasks such as the opening and closing of gates/ramps
Accurately read gauges and other measuring devices to determine air pressure, hydraulic oil levels, and oxygen levels Skills
A captain must be able to
Make accurate and sound decisions based on a variety of factors
Give full attention to other peoples points and take time to understand them
Control and operate various machines/read and interpret various gauges and dials to see if machines are working properly
Coordinate ones own actions according to others actions
Instruct others and informing them of crucial information Knowledge/Education
A captain must know
Correct public safety and security procedures, methods, and strategies for the protection of people, data, and property
Knowledge of proper transportation methods and correct procceses for customer services
Knowledge of administration/management methods to best structure cordination of people and materials
Knowledge of geographical principles and telecommunication methods
Usually a vocational schooling is all that is required with some on the job experience Training Programs
